Some advice to consider when choosing deep cycle batteries
- Sealed lead acid batteries are not necessarily deep cycle and may only be designed for emergency use only.
- The optimum charge voltage for flooded (wet) lead acid batteries is higher than the optimum charge voltage for sealed batteries.
- Often a regulator needs to be used to prevent over charging from high voltage. Gel batteries are especially prone to damage from incorrect charging.
Charge voltage should not exceed
- Flooded (wet) lead acid - 14.8 Volts
- AGM batteries (absorbed glass mat) - 14.6 Volts
- Gel - 14.2 Volts
Please note this is only a guide for specifics please refer to the manufactures data sheet.
Sealed lead acid batteries should be kept away from extreme heat, for example not in car engine bays. Extreme heat can cause sealed batteries to vent gas through an emergency valve (usually a distinctive rotten egg smell), once this valve is used the battery is no longer a sealed battery.
